Once split in half, Berlin has healed itself and become a top tourist destination. Whether you’re into bratwurst and beer at Oktoberfest, cold war history, classic cars or even a day at the beach (what?), Berlin has a lot to offer!
Berlin Wall
A cold war relic, the Berlin wall is now an open gallery for graffiti artists. Built in 1961 and partially demolished in 1989 it captures the history and future of Germany simultaneously. Sections have been collected and displayed all over the world. Even in a Las Vegas hotel! You’ll definitely want to allocate some time to strolling along what remains. At one point it extended 96 miles!
Checkpoint Charlie
Another remnant of Berlin’s history, Checkpoint Charlie was a gateway through the Berlin wall. It is particularly famous due to its location and the fact that it was the main way in which people from “the West” were allowed into East Berlin.
Beach bars
One of the more surprising things you’ll find in Berlin are beach bars, along the rivers. These bars come complete with the sand, beach chairs and umbrellas. With the frequently gray skies and cold winters, it seems the people of Berlin don’t want to have to hop a flight to get that tropical vibe.
Car museum
If you like cars, you’re going to love the Classic Remise Berlin. More than your average car show, this museum is housed in a renovated tram depot dating back to 1899! Yes, they have all the Ferraris and fancy cars, but personally, I really like all the quirky European models from decades ago.
Brandenburg gate
The Brandenburg Gate, built between 1788 and 1791, was originally known as the Peace Gate. It served as an entrance to the city which was previously encircled by a wall.
The gate has a long storied history and is an immediately recognizable symbol. This is especially true of its quadriga (a chariot drawn by four horses), driven by Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory.
Museum of Technology
With everything from antique electronics to trains and airplanes, the German Museum of Technology (Deutsches Technikmuseum) is definitely worth a visit!
You’ll get lost amongst the interactive history all around you.
Last but not least, if you’ve never had it, I highly recommend grabbing a “Currywurst”. This sausage covered in curry flavored ketchup was a street food favorite.
Whatever your motivation, you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for in Berlin. It’s a sprawling metropolitan city with great nightlife as well. So much so that my hotel clerk in Amsterdam of all places, called it a “party city”!?
Prost!
