As recently as 2021, Zürich was ranked as the most expensive city in Europe. I can still vividly remember the sticker shock from going to a McDonalds (the global cost of living measurement). This city is a key hub for global finance and the pricy lifestyle of the locals can be seen throughout. You’ll find many shops catering to high-end clientele.
Glacial waters
Fed with the crystal clear water of the glaciers of the Glarus Alps , Lake Zürich is one of the many lovely natural features of Zürich. There are ferries to the other towns along the lake, which extends southeast of the city. There are also tourist cruises available, for a view from the water. It’s also very common to find numerous swans swimming in the lake, making it a romantic spot to take a stroll. So grab your significant other and enjoy the view.
In addition to the lake, you will find numerous rivers and streams throughout the city. I’ll bet that the rivers and streams in your hometown aren’t as clear as these pristine waters. There are numerous bridges spanning these waterways that you can stroll across. In a seemingly Europe-wide tradition, you’ll find padlocks attached to many of the bridges, which represent the commitments of many couples.
Getting around in town
Luckily, Zürich boasts one of the most efficient and reliable public transportation systems in the world. You will find many busses and streetcars connecting all the major points of the city. Since they are all owned by the same company, one ticket can get you a ride on just about every mode of transportation. When traveling, it’s always a good idea to use public transportation, to avoid traffic accident nightmares . We prefer it as well because of the cost and you get a chance to slowly take in the sights, rather than being focused on the road.
Sightseeing
Zürich is an architectural showcase. You’ll find just about every architectural style represented. The traditional structures have such a whimsical soul that you’ll expect Heidi to stroll out the front door any second. It truly gives you a sense of historical European life.
From the Grossmünster , a charming twelfth century cathedral, to sweeping landscapes, you’ll want to keep your camera ready to capture all the sights. If you happen to visit when the snow has fallen, be warned. You might grab a cup of hot chocolate and disappear into one of the beyond charming cottages until spring returns, just for the cuteness of it all.
